Satins--anyone have experience of them?

For a few years i have tested as having a raised cholesterol level and my doctor has been just retesting and doing nothing-in view of what is being said on the news today, i am considering pushing the matter.
As a background to this 6 of my mother's siblings died of heart attacks around my age and although my mother is old there is 'history'
Does anyone have experience of satins and side affects etc?

There's some good advice in that report, and plenty more info if you dig around and do a little online research.......and p-l-e-a-s-e don't believe/ be fooled by everything that Conventional Medical "Wisdom" chucks at you and tries to frighten you with....remember there's often just money behind these warnings, not treatment for your health!!!

Everyone I know personally who's been prescribed them has refused to take them after a while.

There are some doctors (thank god) that will not prescribe statins. A friend of mine had an increase in his cholesterol levels following a general check-up and the doctor immediately said 'I recommend statins.' He went back to his usual doctor, and and was shown a 1 page document why you should take statins and a 8 page document why you shouldn't!
Don't go there!
If you are over 50 and female, there is loads of evidence that a high cholesterol level will PROTECT you from heart disease, as well as other conditions.0 -
I don't personally but my husband (about 26 at the time) managed to take them for about a week as they made him feel sick and disorientated.
His nanny has been on them for years, with no problems.0 -
i didnt realise it but my father has been taking statins for 25 years!(i dont often enquire about my father's drugs because he takes so many!)-he told me my grandfather had very high cholestral levels and was treated as well as they could back in the 70s but he died with heart problems that my father thought connected to it.
My father has no side effects and reckons that without statins he would have died many years ago-he is 85 now and my father's family's previous average age of 'termination' was 76.--
İ dont trust my GP over this matter and i am going to private specialist to get the whole range of tests before i make my decision--based on the info received here and what my father has revealed!mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0 -
Good luck:)
Average age of termination (like the term btw:p) here is 40!
I will show DH your advice Murphydog from the LC thread regarding the other tests, Thank you0 -
The headline here in the Mail....I'm sure it'll be in other papers too if you don't like this one....reads
"Why EVERYONE over 50 needs to be taking statins: Cholesterol-busting pills cut risk of heart attack or stroke"
from here http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2145558/Why-EVERYONE-50-needs-taking-statins-Cholesterol-busting-pills-cut-risk-heart-attack-stroke.html
But.....read the comments, from quite a lot of people who've had experience with this "wonder drug"!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm 62, and there'd be NO WAY I'd take this poison !!!!

I have been on them for 3 years. Family history of strokes and heart attacks. My mother's side of the family all died in their early 40s or early 60s.
Personally I have no problem with them and no side effects either.0 -
i can only say that relatives have taken them long term with no side effects......there are risks of side effects with any medication (just read the leaflet in a paracetamol packet to freak yourself out!) but it's about risks versus benefits. statins won't suit anyone and some types will be better for some people than others. it's worth talking through your concerns with your GP to see what risk/benefit ratio is for you. that's what is most important - any number of personal stories on the internet (good, bad or indifferent) are no substitute for the large group studies on safety and efficacy, or relevant to your specific medical history.:happyhear0

If you don't fancy statins and you can make the adjustment of basically giving up meat, there is evidence that a very low fat diet can reduce cholesterol.

Dr Dean Ornish's programme for reversing heart disease is the best known version of this kind of diet.
