Hi there my dad has started making wooden garden pots as a theraputic aid with my husband. We now have too many so I was thinking of selling them at car boots. There seems to be a lot of interest for them.

Do I need to set up a business to do this every week? Or is it a sole trader?

I am digging my way through bussiness link but having never had any involvment with self employment I'm struggling to be honest.

Any help will be so greatfully recieved.

Thanks for reading.

You would need to register as a sole trader with the HMRC and you can apply for a Class 2 NI exemption.

It is possible to be self employed and claiming JSA, however, you must declare what you have earnt from self employment when you sign on and your benefits will be adjusted accordingly. You will be able to work for 15.59hrs and your benefits will be amended accordingly each time you have earnt money from self employment, I do know that you will be allowed to keep £5 and the rest is 'taken' for want of a better word from your JSA.

As this is a regular weekly thing then it would be classed as self employment, however, if you did say one boot sale every 4-6 months then that wouldn't be self employment but a way of getting rid of your possessions much like ebay. If it is a regular thing then it is self employment and you need to register.

Brilliant, thanks for that. I am just wading through business links to find out how to go about it all properly.
The plan is to be a regular thing and look at selling through ebay, facebook etc... so self employed is the right thing.
