Outbacker Insurance

Can anybody shed any light on "Outbacker Insurance" ?

Their highest package seems very cheap and has nil excess, but what worries me is that there are no reviews of them in the internet anywhere.

I did phone up to ask a question and spoke to a friendly woman in a UK call centre though.

Thanks

I've used them before and had no issues whatsoever. (I tend to quote them as one of the backpacker insurance companies when I am helping people look for backpacker insurance on the forum, alongside some other insurers)

I had to make a small claim for baggage loss and they sorted things out pretty quickly so all in all - a good experience. (unlike my last car insurer )

With travel insurance (and insurance in general) it's far more common to get people venting on review sites - meaning no reviews is likely to mean no angry customers to vent off = good?

They are on The Student Room as one of the two backpacker insurance companies listed - beyond that this is the closest to a review I could find. I used them in 2009 so they have been round for a while.

Edit: I am assuming you mean this Outbacker Insurance as there seems to be an Outback Insurance?

    Hi,

From looking at the related threads tomby1 u seem to know ur stuff when it comes to this type of insurance. I too have been looking at outbacker insurance and the price seems good. The only thing is I would like to insure my iPad and iPhone if possible for my 8 month trip (to usa aus and asia) on the same insurance. I have also been looking at globelink.co.uk who are offering £320 for this on their most comprehensive cover, have you or anyone herd of them?

I have also looked at the other recommendations you have previously made, none include a single item limit big enough. Sorting insurance is sooo loooonnnggg!!

    Thanks!

Managed to restumble across this thread - if you (or any others) are still looking for the information... (I'm sure people may come through Google etc)

I haven't really heard of Globe Link before - I didn't find them when researching. They appear to be more expensive for similar cover than some other travel insurance brands. The reviews I can find for them seem to be a mixed bag - so may be worth a punt.

If you can't find an insurer that will cover high value items, you could always insure those items on top on your travel insurance.

    Either;

    a) ring the insurer and ask them if they can cover your items separately
    b) go with a site like Protect My Bubble. They will cover anything that is under 12 months old - if it's older than that, if you take into account excess etc, it may well not be worth insuring separately anyway. It is worldwide cover, but there may be terms such as only being allowed to take it abroad for 30 days at a time.

    a) is the preferred option - in my personal opinion. Most travel insurers are relatively flexible.

Whatever you do, don't just insure your gadgets and not yourself. If you lose your ipod or laptop, you've lost something worth a couple of hundred quid. If you need medical treatment, the bills can run into the tens of thousands of pounds (or even more!)
  • Hey :)
i am looking for backpackers insurance as well to go a working holiday for a year with my boyfriend to Australia and its all turning out to be easier said than done if I'm honest, different company's seem to have huge price differences so its difficult to understand if they all cover the same thing and even if they are all legitimate companies. like yourself i have came across 'outbacker insurance' but cant find any reviews online and it does sound a bit to good to be true?
I reallllllly need help we are leaving on Thursday!
    Thanks
    Claire x :)
  • Hi,

Just wanted to come on and share the really good experience I had with Outbacker...I paid £80 for an 11 week backpacker policy, whcih included waiving the excess. Ended up being robbed in Mexico of everything of any value, and while admittedly the claims handlers were a little tricky to get hold of (first coulpe of times I tried lines were close, despite being during office hours) finally got a claim form emailed to me. I'd kept literally every receipt - taxi to embassy to replace passport, bus tickets, hotel reservations - and having filled in the claim form when I got home (I gave as much detail as possible and did an inventory of all the diff docs I was attaching) got a cheque for £540 in post. They literally paid out against everything I'd claimed for. Not often you get a no quibble result from an insurer!
  • Just wanted to add that I used Outbacker Insurance for a year's trip to Aus and Asia - they were fantastic. Excellent value (can't remember how much but spent a long time researching it before I went and they were one of the cheapest) and I ended up having an emergency operation - they were always at the end of the phone, extremely helpful and supportive in a difficult time, stepped in and solved a few problems for me when it would have been really difficult for me to do it myself. Paid for everything up front and there were no costs to me - basically it was a very smooth experience and I feel they went above and beyond. Use them!
