What exactly is needed for Virgin Media wireless upgrade? (Router, modem etc)

Ok really struggling here. Im trying to find a replacement for my Virgin Media 'Super Hub' (ahem) due to the poor wireless reception i am receiving through it. (One bar signal, internet pages take over a minute to load etc)

Ive spent the last hour or so trying to find a replacement but i cannot seem to find an upgrade that has a cable (not ADSL!) modem with it? What should i be looking for? Im trying to find an all in one solution, i.e. only one box, one power supply etc but getting absolutely nowhere.

I have my office PC wired which would remain so, but then have a media PC in the lounge, a laptop and also a PS3 that would be running wireless.

While i know upgrading would improve wireless, would speeds increase via wired? I know that may be a silly question, but worth asking about ;)

:)

I set my Superhub to modem only mode, and kept my original router, because:

    a) The wireless range was crap; and
    b) It saved transferring sh!tl0ads of configuration info from one to the other (DHCP reservations, MAC filtering etc)

So would keeping the super hub as a modem only then connecting an upgraded router the be the best option? Like you mention, really dont want the hassle of transferring tons of settings over!

Contact virgin media and have a moan about how your super hub is so slow and overheating.
I got a new one free.

Yes, we got a new hub too after complaining, apparently the firmware has been considerably upgraded and it solved our problems which were similar to yours.

There's nothing you should have played with unless you wanted to use the advanced features of the modem/router.

However, should you wish to use features like port forwarding, site blocking, MAC filtering, DHCP reservation (among others), you have to change settings.
