Sudden death - how do I find which Utilities supplied gas and electric?

My cousin died suddenly last week. His mother is in her 80s and struggling to cope with the loss of her only child.
He had been living alone in a council property, there is no paperwork or clues as to who could be supplying his electricity.
He doesn't have a will so bank account is frozen.
Also, I know a spouse would be entitled to a payment for funeral arrangements, would a parent be able to claim anything? He had moved in with his mum a week before he died.
Any help appreciated.

Hi, sorry to hear of your loss.
To find out who supplies electricity, you can call MPAS on 0845 270 9101 and to find out about gas call Transco on 0870 608 1524.
I'm not sure which area you are but if these number's don't cover your area they'll be able to give you the right numbers.
All you need is the property address and postcode and they will be able to tell you.
Sorry I can't help with any of your other questions x
  • Regarding payment for the funeral, when my Dad died we were told that if the funeral directors sent the invoice to the bank they would release the money to the funeral directors. It is worth speaking to the bank to check as it may vary bank to bank. Dad was with HSBC but his building society said the same thing.

A parent is on the list of people who can apply for a Funeral Payment, have a look and see if your Aunt would qualify.
