I've got 3 clumps in different parts of the garden and last year they didn't produce a single flower  the width of the plants at soil level is about 8 inches - are they too big and should I split them up to get them flowering again ?
Does anyone know if the flower buds might have been eaten before they emerged through the leaves, are they susceptible to lilly beetle (are they actually lillies ?). Or do I just need to give them a good feed of tomato or rose fertiliser ?
I don't want to dig them up and throw them on the compost heap as they are expensive to replace, so any help would be gratefully received.

Hi
I love day lilies! Yours don't sound congested - did you know that they need deadheading to ensure they don't set seed, as this reduces flower numbers for the next year
Feeding helps them flower - I never give anything "a good feed", just a light feed as I am on clay and use my own compost which is already richYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0 -
I have two patchs of Day Lilies each of about two square metres - the blasted things would take over the garden if I let them! I do nothing to them, no feeding, no dead-heading, no watering, and they still prosper and flower (the yellow ones are coming out now, the common orange ones won't be out for another month or so). So if yours aren't happy, I suppose it must be the soil?
Our garden is horrible heavy clay, so maybe that's what they like? I don't think it can be moisture, because one of our patches gets very dry in the summer, and the other is in the lower part of the garden which is like a quagmire in winter and damp all summer. However, both patches do get lots of sun (our garden faces south).
The only pest they have ever suffered from is the young shoots being eaten by deer in early spring!0 -
i think they take a couple of years to mature into flowering 8" is quite a small plant yetFight Back - Be Happy0
