Broken Microwave - Any rights?

Clutching at straws a bit here, mostly because i'm pretty irritated about it all.

In December 2011, my partner and i moved in together, and as a house warming present, my mother bought us a Panasonic NN-E271WM Microwave, which i believe was about £70.

We've only really used it a few times since then, until about 10-days ago when my partner was using it to heat up a cup of tea, when it started to smell very hot, then turned itself off - now it wont power up at all.

I checked with mum, and she thinks she gave us the receipt - and i don't remember having it, so between us we've lost it. She bought it from our local Tesco, so she went in, and they said, without the receipt, they wont do anything about it, and we should try Panasonic. She used her clubcard when she bought it, but apparently they only keep purchase records for 10 days so that doesn't help.

I emailed Panasonic, who, when they actually bothered to reply a week after i emailed them, basically state that without the original proof of purchase from one of their approved retailers, they don't have to honour the 12-month warranty.

Now, aside from moaning that i'll never buy another Panasonic piece of rubbish again, do i have any rights/any other options? All a bit fed up!

Your mother needs only supply proof of purchase to Tesco, as they are the retailer. If she doesn't have the receipt, then a credit/debit card statement showing the purchase would suffice.

Panasonic's only responsibility is regaring the warranty, which is an addition to your rights against Tesco. If they require the receipt, then only the receipt will do.

Oh ok. What happens about the receipt not showing the same amount? Because knowing mum she probably did a weeks shop at the same time...

    Thanks for the help,

Aren't the receipts are usually itemised ? So it should show the purchase.

PS: For what it's worth - we had a Panasonic Microwave and the magnetron failed twice - once under warranty and once out of warranty. I would NEVER buy another Panasonic

We have a Panasonic used nearly every day for nine years. Light has just gone otherwise fine. You can never tell with electrics and no I dont work or invest in Panasonic.

Sorry, i didn't make that clear - What happens if the Bank Statement (I dont have the receipt) shows a value of more than we paid for the microwave (Because we bought bread, eggs, milk, etc etc at the same time?)

Proof of purchase should, I believe, include things like bank statements, etc - so it is entirely plausible that the amount may add up to more than the individual purchase because it was bought along with other stuff.

Don't let them tell you that you definitely need a receipt - they can insist on that if they offer any guarantee - but in this case, the goods are faulty.

And, assuming it's less than 6 months (if you're quick), then the fault should be classed as inherent and it would be upto Tesco to prove otherwise.

They can, however, reduce any offer by the length of time that you've had the item. (unless they replace or repair)

And that's fine - I appreciate that I may have just been unlucky.

But to have two failures within a relatively short space of time (and the same failure each time) has made my mind up already - I will never buy another Panasonic Microwave.
