Royal Mail

My sister posted me some vases that a friend had said he wanted to buy for £300. When I received them they had broken in transit. We insured the parcel for £800. I put in a claim to Royal Mail, who firstly said the items were not packed right! After disputing that and winning Royal Mail are now saying that they will only pay £100 compensation because they do not know the value of the vases and because the buyer did not pay for them! Well would you pay for broken goods!! I need some help on how to get the £300 from Royal Mail. They want me to get the vases valued but this will cost me again.

Thanks.

They need to have proof of the value before they pay out, this is reasonable. Otherwise I could go to poundland, buy a vase and send it insured as a Ming for £1million. If you don't have oproof of the value, you will have to get them valued somewhere.

It's only standard parcels that doesn't provide cover for ceramics or glass.
Every other RM service does, providing their packing and labelling requirements are met.
  • Yes all packaging guidelines were met, surely if someone was going to pay £300 and he has confirmed that then that is what we should receive because the sale has fallen through!

Unfortunately, if it were that simple, there would be fraudulent claims with "friends" getting together and agreeing to pay a huge amount for a worthless item, then claiming the inflated amount from RM.

So, RM are only going to pay what they're actually worth - even if that's less than what the buyer was going to pay.

  • Result, after further discussion and advising that a dealer were selling the same vase for a particular price Royal Mail have agreed to pay the full amount! Cheques in the post!!!
