planting squash through WPM?

I have a few butternut squash plants I have sown, which I was planning on popping a couple of them between my sweetcorn when I plant them out. However, I have 7 seedlings, and I know they take up a lot of space. I have my old veg patch, which unfortunately got huge numbers of perennial weeds, that I was going to roughly weed, and cover with weed proof membrane for a year or two to try and rescue it (or just returf it)
Could I plant the squash through the WPM, or do they need contact with the soil in a creeping fashion, or even some tomatoes? I know I would have to make sure the hole bit was weeded, and they would need more watering?

I don't see why not, but you may have to peg the long shoots down a bit until the fruit form, or strong winds may blow them about more easily.

I peg mine anyway, even when growing conventionally, as I don't have enough weeds etc for them to wrap tendrils around *cough* *cough!*

They'd be fine here - I grow mine in a dalek composter and trail them up a wall and along the top and give them a bucket of water each a day but think I actually overwater so will try to restrict it this year and see if they put down deeper roots and get more self-sufficient

My biggest problem is getting them pollenated as I liek to do it by hand but they are 6ft up a wall!
