need ideas for door

We have just had new oak panel doors fitted, and the door to the cupboard under the stairs is a lot smaller, and still the actual old door.

The only way I can describe it, is its a dark brown hollow door, made to look like a mahogany type door, but its not, more like a plastic veneer over the door.

So, I was thinking of using like a paint and grain type stuff, so this door would actually blend more in with the other oak doors, but the one in oak looks too dark.

is there anything else I could put over this door, that wouldnt look silly, but still sort of look oakish.

I was half toying with the idea of buying something like a formica covering on a roll, that looks like oak, but dont know if they do anything like that, as I have never used formica, but remember it was in way back when lol.

I even though of a thin oak type veneer type of sheeting to fix over the door, but then there would be that edge.

So any ideas in how to turn this horrible door into an oak looking door, would be very much appreciated.:D

i put a veneer on top of a chest of drawers, and it's soo think you don't notice the edge, got mine from b&q for about £6 from memory, you can stain or paid it but it is actuall wood so you get the grain,

i think that would look much better than a vinyl plastic, and probably cost the same.
our last house had the skirting and doors done with the paint and stain when we movd in and looked terrible, might have been poorly done but for the cost i'd go veneer.

Have you thought about getting a replacement door fitted? You may be able to pick up a pine one quite cheaply & use a light oak woodstain. I'd dilute it & do several coats until you get the colour that you're after.
I've never seen paint & grain done particularly well.

2 good ideas, and worth looking into, as for the paint and grain, I have never used this, but have used the 'dulux brushwood one' on a number of jobs for clients, (P&D), and it does look good, if done right.
I still have the box of paint and grain, and the receipt, cause there has been something telling me not to use it, so will definately look into the veeneer sheets, and price up some doors.

Thanks again for your suggestions, very much appreciated as was getting concerned no one replied lol.

Well Jaffa, I pop into B&Q this morning, spoke to a couple of assistants, or should I say school kids, and not one of them had a clue what I was on about.

We went round the whole place and couldnt find anything like you described, but I think I may have found something on the net that might do the job, have to contact them to ask a couple of questions, so watch this space.:D
  • would recommend a sheet of 18mm oak veneered mdf from local builders merchant

I'm guessing these new doors you have are 6 panel? 4 large panels & 2 small ones at the top.

I have a door like this under the stairs & I plan to get the matching 6 panel door (in the narrow width) & chop the bottom panels off, so the door will have the 2 long panels & the 2 little ones at the top, so it's an exact match, just cut different.
