    A 3.4kW storage heater(not 3.4kWh) will consume 23.8kWh if left on for the 7 hours of off-peak.

It will lose heat during those 7 hours even with the output turned down and of course during the day as well(again with the output turned right down.)

Naturally the heat will 'leak' at a faster rate initially and the rate of leakage will slow as the bricks cool.

The amount of leakage depends on many factors, but it is way more than the 1kWh you suggest, even with modern storage heaters. I have seen it suggested that after 14 hours with output to zero there is little useful heat left.

It was the most expensive form of heating I ever had, made worse by the phenomenal charges for using the immersion heater.

However, I don't agree with efficiency figures of 70%. They load up with 3.4kW over 7 hours totalling 23.8kWh of energy. If 1kWh of energy is wasted over the first 8 hours then the efficiency by your method is 95.8%.

If this is the case, and some checking agreed with you, then the numbers work out worse.

    The temperature I worked out - 125C - simply rises to 875C.
This makes the loss rise from about 150W to more like 1.2kW (insulation at higher temperatures is inefficient)

we have now had storage heaters, gas central heating and now oil fired central heating. the latest is the worst -gas is best, storage heaters were clean and convenient. may also suit us now as we live by the coast and its a dry heat. i'd rip the oil out tomorrow if i could

OK...I see the higher the temperature the higher the heat loss. They do lose heat during the day and by 10PM at night are quite useless then requiring the user to use some sort of peak rate electric heating for a few more hours if they wish to stay up. A well designed system shouldn't run out until about this time if the controls are used correctly. I'm not sure about the 1.2kw. I have an electric 800W oil filled electric radiator and it puts out more heat than a fully loaded (large 3.4kw) storage heater when the output damper is set to the minimum level. Also if I did agree with the figure then the 1.2kw figure would only be for the first hour then the temperature of the bricks would have dropped so maybe 1.0kw for the second hour then 0.9kw for the third hour and 0.8kw for the fourth hour and so on....

  • If your coffee tastes lousy without sufficient sugar its because you ran out of sugar, if you stored enough sugar you would not run out of sugar before your next opportunity to replenish it.

Solution- increase the amount you store and enjoy the sweet coffee in a nice, warm at all times, home !
