This is on behalf of a friend (no really I promise).

A relative has died and they knew that he had substantial investments but they can't track them down. They've started by going through his bank statements which sounds like a good line of enquiry but wondered if anyone could suggest another way of finding his investments?

Edit: just found Martin's guide to reclaiming lost cash, looks like a good way to start:

You could speculatively register the death with every bank you can think of. Oh, and life companies and investment firms.

Paperwork in the house is the most likely way to find what you need. And annual statements.

    Hi cte1111,

Had the same situation....I was advised (successfully) to go to

    www.mylostaccount.org.uk.

Fill in the questions and you will get replirs from all manner of financial institutions saying either they have or haven't got accounts held in your relatives name.

The longest drawn out one for me was from NS&I...had to jump through hoops to get the info (nice to know that they don't just hand out info though)....then the Warrent arrived!!!.....0.26p!!.

I could hear my relative saying "that'll teach you!"

    Good luck.

use heirhunters? The ones that figure on BBC1 every so often. They will not come cheap but they will know every trick in the book.

EDIT: Just saw on this BBC page that the main outfit featuring in that program doesn't accept requests from the general public.

But they list these guys on the page: http://www.bonavacantia.gov.uk/output/ - may be they can help

Also, make sure that you redirect all the mail to your house for a year. May turn up annual statements.

And use the pensions tracing service too.
