Best bank to go to for a Basic Debit Account with a bad credit History?

Hi all,

Firstly I want to apologise if I have posted in the wrong place but am just wanting to know if any of you MSE Forum members know what would be the best bank to go to for a basic account if I have bad debt.

I as many have have had bad debt in the past, I did have an account with Lloyds but they have closed my account and handed it to collections, Ive had various other defaults and stuff but I really really a basic account.

Im not bothered about an overdraft or anything like that (not that id get one anyway lol) but I know banks now are very strict taking on new customers if they have a bad credit rating.

Any Reccomendations????

Thanks in advance

  • Bad debt or bad credit history?

Is the debt still ongoing? How much?

Most banks will allow a basic bank account with a customer who has debt. Its still money going through their accounts.

However if the debt is a little more serious, they may become a little more skeptical.

I read an article recently about thinkbanking. A bank/card that will allow wages and bill to be taken out etc. They don't perform a credit check :)

Let me know if you need more help

Think Banking is more of a budgeting account when wages/benefits are paid into the main account, money for direct debits is held in the account and money not needed moved to the prepaid card. £15 setup and £15 monthly in advance.

Secure Trust Bank is much the same but allows the account holder to decide how much to leave in the main account and how much to move to the prepaid card. But this might change when the enhancement to their online banking is done - integration of the group's popular Onebill service. £12.50p setup and £12.50p monthly in advance.

Impossible to go overdrawn on both and no charges for bounced direct debits but they are highly likely to remove direct debits which have bounced.

The above are last resort measures when all else have failed.

I seem to remember The Co-Op and Barclays being the best for providing basic accounts to people with bad debt.
