Hi there. I left my job last week for personal reasons, and I was in my third month probationary period as well. I wrote them an e-mail asking them to accept this as my letter of resignation and it was with immediate effect. I attached a letter stating what my reasons for leaving were, and thanked them for my time with them. I said I would give them a hand-written copy of my resignation e-mail to them. They replied, and thanked me for my letter.
I was paid the wages I was owed, as well as my holiday pay I'd accrued. Before I left, I made sure I had enough money in the bank to keep me going for a few months.

I didn't have a job to go to, and went to the Job Centre today. They couldn't have been more helpful. They asked me if I knew my JSA could be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks because I'd voluntarily made myself unemployed - this, I was aware of. She said that if I had 'just cause' for leaving and my claim is rejected, I could appeal. Ten minutes after my interview had finished, I got a call from my adviser saying she'd found a position for me in Accounting and can arrange an interview. I meet with the company on Friday.

Do not stay in a job that is affecting your health. While money is very important, your well-being is even moreso.

If you are going to breach your contract which is what you are doing at least have the courtesy to be honest with the employer.

Why? The OP is leaving it doesnt matter to him/her what the manager thinks, your letter is polite and to the point. Absolutely no need to get negative in an email
  • I've been in your situation and quit my well paid full time job a few months ago because I was on leave due to stress and absolutely dreaded going back - I was at the point where I was having panic attacks and went to hospital. Sometimes the people you work with can just be awful and make your life a misery.
I have never quit a job in my life and don't condone anyone should just quit without a backup, but sometimes if you can't take any more you have to do what is best for you & your health.

I do believe it's always good to end on a positive note, I even ended up saying in an email to my manager that I was sad to leave etc. It wasn't true I wanted nothing more than to quit that place, but my manager ended up sending a nice message back to me saying thank you for letting him know and sorry to see me leave. It's always better to leave on good terms I think - plus even if you explain how you were unhappy, your employer isn't going to do anything about it now you're leaving.

If your manager replies positively to your email he/she will still give you a positive reference and you could put the job on your CV as a temporary/3 month contract position, or just leave it off and keep your previous employment down instead.

I'm still so happy I left my last job, I was so depressed and the best thing I ever did was leave. I've never quit a job before, and I've worked some horrible jobs, but this one topped them all. I'm now working for myself from home making ebay sales whilst I look for a new job. It's a struggle but definitely worth my sanity!

Wishing you all the best :j
