A fault can also develop over time as a result of poor manufacturing, the consumer would equally have rights here if the goods haven't lasted a reasonable time.
The fact it went through the MOT successfully doesn't now mean it's a case of better luck next time.
A could go through an MOT at 10k miles, then have it's cam belt snap at 15k, so the belt was not pointed out at the mot stage and has not lasted a reasonable or expected length of time!0
