How can I prove car boot purchase costs to Taxman?

I am thinking of buying from car-boots and selling on eBay. Car Boot Sellers especially private ones, do not give receipts. How do other eBay sellers account for their costs to HMRC?

Apart from the obvious expenses of postage and eBay/PayPal fees, what other costs are allowable?

HMRC have free and helpful help lines that can tell you all you need to know, with an added bonus, if they do happen to tell you something wrong you can say it was their fault!

  • If I'm buying at a car booty I take around my own book of receipts and just ask sellers to fill one out, if they object, just explain you're a trader, something like this (click here) should do the trick.
