Basic plumbing advice needed please

Hi all,
One of the many things that the pillock who used to live at my house messed up was the kitchen he fitted. The sink and drainer are connected directly to a pipe that runs outside above the drain. There is no u-bend or anything so basically whenever there is a gust of wind we get a waft of really pongy drain air coming up through the plughole. All of the pipes and sink are fitted using clicky plastic.
My question is what do I need to fit to stop the air coming up? Do I need a u-bend or is there something else I can fit? I want to take up as little space as possible as I have little cupboard space. I can provide a diagram if my explanation is rubbish!?
thanks in advance

You need either a u-bend or a bottle trap. Both do essentially the same job - keeping a reservoir of water between you & the outside world. Pop into a local plumbers merchants & they'll be happy to give you advice & kit.0
