Money Supermarket - not so super

Martin's Money Tips recommends Money Supermarket. But when I got a price comparison today for house insurance, I was shortly afterwards phoned by someone from an insurance company touting for trade. He had obviously been given my phone number by Money Supermarket - which I had not asked them to do.
So beware of using price comparison sites: they may spread your private details everywhere.

Strange, I've used the site a lot and it's never happened to me, thank heavens.
Could it be a co-incidence? Is it beyond the realms of possibility that you have allowed your details to be disclosed to "selected partners" at some point in the past?Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I buy leads off money supermarket.
They do tell you but i admit it isnt very clear - which in all fairness is just as frustrating for us advisors as it is for you receiving the call as we have spent money needlessly.
To be honest, ive actually reduced the number i buy off them de to the poor conversion rates i get from them.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Money supermarket sell your details to firms buying leads. Quite a few do.
There should be the option to opt out of this during the quote process.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -
The opt out never works, as it always resets to default back in, if you go back. Use a dummy phone number, or money supermarkets contact number. 0845 345 5708. Never use your real details for name, address, or car reg, until you're ready to complete the purchase.0

Hi Diddlums,
First of all let me apologise for the frustration this must have caused. Rest assured, MoneySupermarket takes customer privacy extremely seriously - and we do not sell personal data and we do not add any fees or commissions to the products or services you compare. You can read our Privacy Policy and our full Terms & Conditions by clicking on the footer on the bottom of all pages on our site - sadly we can't link to them from this account at the moment.
In order for us to provide you with a car insurance quote, we do require that you provide us with details. In order for the companies to provide a quote, they require these details. Without that data, they simply would not be able to return a quote. You can ask us to stop passing your information to third parties at any time.
The service which ACG is referring to is our PAA Leads subsidiary for mortgage advisers. This is carried out with the full knowledge of customers who enquire about a mortgage and who require specialist advice. They too can opt out of this at any time. We are fully regulated by the Financial Services Authority and our registration number is FSA FRN 303190.
I hope that helps explain our procedures in more detail. If you have any other problems, please don't hesitate to drop us a line at customerservices@moneysupermarket.com or by calling the team on 0845 345 5708 and we'll be more than happy to look into this for you.

I will no longer put my details corectly into price comparison sites, I now use dummy info close to my own everytime.
The reason I stopped is because Aviva credit search my file every year even though I have always opted to pay my insurance annually. They have admitted they do this but through price comparison sites, trying to get them to remove your details is like pulling teeth. It is only Aviva that do these searches - why??
I will never give my business to Aviva again as they are just as unhelpful. I will only use price comparison sites to my advantage using dummy information so they can sell it on as much as they like:D
