Which Current Account

Ok so I have had enough with my current bank who I've been with for 12 years and want to move.

Now I don't necessarily want an account you have to pay a monthly charge for as I'm not interested in any insurance, breakdown etc they offer.

I just want a basic account to pay my salary into and has a small free interest free overdraft.

Any views or recommendations?

First Direct? £250 interest free overdraft and decent customer service.

Internet banking is a little lacking but you can't have everything.

I'd be wary of any 'best buy' table which includes Santander as a "best buy".

Fair enough, if you are in the "bash Santander, always" brigade.

I do have a Santander current account (now paying me at least £100 a year), and I have nor more complaints about them than I have about the others I have, or have had, current accounts with. That includes the much lauded First Direct.

I don't, however, as a matter of principle, ever use any overdraft, so my experience is limited to accounts that are always in credit.

All banks are basically the same wouldn't say one is better then the other as everyone has had different experiences, at the end of the day they are a buisness and none of them give a toss about their customers.

be cautious about the use of the word 'basic' account as it has a special meaning i.e. one for beginners or people with credit problems and usually come with restrictions (i.e. no OD)

When I say basic account I mean I don't want one you pay for and get lots of features such as travel insurance, mobile phone cover etc.

I very rarely go into my overdraft but there has been the odd month where I've paid my rent, plus my mortgage and spend a couple of days overdrawn till I receive my rent from my tenants.

I was contemplating First Direct but couldn't work out from their website if there was a current account you didn't have to pay for?

First Direct current account costs £10 a month if you do not pay in at least £1,500 a month. However you can put £1 into their savings account (Not regular saver) and you don't pay the £10 a month. :-)

Also they have a really good 8% regular saver account :-)
