Mortgage Application - Proof of address problem

Hi,

I'm currently applying for a mortgage and a number of hurdles have come up along the way. We are now in the final stages but have been informed today that my partner needs to provide proof of address for the property she was living in during 2010-2011.

The problem is that she was living with friends and didn't pay any utility bills. She also didn't receive paper bank statements so there's really no record.

The underwriter has asked for a letter from her bank (RBS) stating that she did live at that address but the bank has refused. The Building Society seem surprised that they won't help and it's looking like our options have run out.

Are there any other avenues we could explore before admitting defeat? Seems such a shame after all the other checks have gone through.

Thanks for your help!

    Hi Bob,

She was self employed at the time so we will contact hmrc to see if they can help. There's a chance she may have been registered at her Grandmother's address even though she wasn't living there so that may be a problem.

    Thanks

When you say she didn't receive paper bank statements, does that mean she got them online via online banking? What bank is she with? My bank (barclays) has all my bank statements from mid 2010. Might be worth a shot?

She is with RBS. We have just been on the phone with them again and they say they don't hold records of old addresses, only your current address.

I'll have a look at her online account tonight but I'm guessing that won't have the address on.

The building society say the can't accept anything other than a letter from the bank so it's looking like we are back to renting if this will be a recurring problem with other lenders.

    Thanks

Experian Credit record? That will hold the last 6 years of registered addresses.

I thought that but the Experian credit checks were carried out last week and we got a call to say we have passed subject to employers references.

It's only now they are asking for this proof so does it mean there's no record of her at any address at that time? I guess we need to check her credit record again but I'd think this issue wouldn't have come up if that address was listed on her record.

    Thanks

If the RBS bank statements are downloadable from her online banking, they will have the address that was registered with the bank at the time the statement was generated.

As paulmapp8306, you could ask the building society if they would accept a full copy of her experian/equifax credit report as that will definately have the address on.

I do wonder though why the building society are asking for proof of a 3 year old address...is this normal?

Also if she was on the electoral roll there, although possibly not as the mortgage provider would have seen that when they carried out their credit checks.

I bet she has some type of official letter she received while at that address.

Its quite possible they havent checked her address with experian - just her credit record.

FWIW, i supplied 3 payslips for my mortage app - which had my rent deducted at source, which Id explained in my covering letter. Despite this the lender asked for proof of rent being paid 2 days later. turns out they just hadnt looked :(

If you used a broker sack them.

If you did it yourself, you should have seen a broker.

Although why they are asking for proof of address from a previous property I'll never know. Stupid.
