Sea Cadets - anyone's children go?

Hi there,
Son has been begging to go to sea cadets after hearing stories from his grandad! So I've found our local one and DS is going on Wednesday to see whats it's like.
I just wondered if anyone has a child who goes to sea cadets and what they do, ( last time DS grandad was over 45 years so I'm sure they have changed a bit). We have also looked at the website and DS likes the look of what they do but again I'm sure he won't be out sailing on weds! If he does decide to join he will be in juniors as he is 10 & 1/2.
Thanks in advance guys
Angie

This probably won't be much help, but my eldest son went to the Army Cadets. He loved it so much he's now an adult instructor.
If your son is keen on becoming a Sea Cadet, then I'd say go for it - you have nothing to lose and your son has everything to gain.0 -
I went when I was little (followed in my aunties footsteps) and my DD went before we moved.
Send him, he will absolutely love it, they do all sorts not just sailing, canoeing but also camping and perhaps going to navy days down in Plymouth (in the Summer).
He may also get to meet the queen etc.
Bare in mind the unit I went too and my DD went too were quite strict, they took no crap from us and made us work on knots and all sorts including scrubbing the floors etc.0 -

Haha sounds just like what he needs! He has been attending cubs but has had some problems with bullying and it's not being dealt with properly (IMO). It also clashes with another activy he wants to do.
His grandad has warned him the they are very strict, boots polished ect.
Oh can't wait for Wednesday to see what he thinks of it all!0 -
My granddaughters are adult instructors in Sea Cadets. They are the third generation of our family who have been actively involved with Sea Cadets - my late first husband was a Chief Petty Officer with them. He was actively involved in getting girls in there on an equal basis. He used to take groups of them away to stay at places like the Royal Naval Air Station at Culdrose.
They learn a lot of useful things - yes, to clean their own boots/shoes, make their own beds, iron their own shirts, be self-reliant, in other words. They can get involved with things like sailing, rowing, a lot of outdoor activities.
