I can only blame extreme tiredness, but this morning I somehow managed to park pretty much in a lampost without actually noticing. Actually, it was wooden, so I guess it's probably a telegraph post. I had to park partly on the pavement because it's a tight road, to allow emergency vehicles access.
All things considered, my car got off pretty lightly from my incompetence with just a lot of scrapes along the side, mainly done I think after I had noticed I had parked in the post, and trying to extract it from that position.
Can anyone offer some advice on what to do to stop this rusting and maybe touch it up? It's an 11 year old car, but still goes great, and I am only up to 70K miles - just sailed through the MOT. Got a few other nicks and one other pushed out dent that you can't really notice now (that was the bollard I did not see in the Tescos car park.)
TIA for any help offered....

Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!

As dodgy as it sounds, Vaseline. Smear it over any metal thats exposed and forget about it until you can get it sorted paint-wise.
Vaseline will protect it from moisture getting in. I've got several scratches thanks to the neighbours on one of my cars and it's got vaseline all over it at the moment until I get it on the road again

would it be even dodgier to mention that vaseline will also aid parking in tight little places in future?

If you like your car and want to keep it, now might be the time to find a one man and his dog small bodyshop, get a quote for all the work and bring the car back up to good nick.
Avoid any bodyshop that has a receptionist or clean handed manager, or carpet in the front office....you'll be paying for them.0 -

I'd be more worried over someone with grubby hands painting my car.0 -

Plus you'll be able to squeeze in to tight parking spaces

Hee hee, well I am loving the vaseline idea and wondering if I shouldn't just cover my whole car in it, what with my parking getting worse and worse....I've got a nice one with Aloe Vera in it so it could smell nice too....
I have a lovely one man band mechanic who 'knows a man' for pretty much anything, but it's really not bad enough to justify spending any money on it and the car really isn't worth much (51 Fiesta). He pushed my last dent out as part of a service (he's a good bloke, the sort who will get all your parts from a breakers yard.) I'm thinking I'll pop into Halfords and get one of those pen thingies at some point and see if I can colour it in maybe.....I guess I need to have a better look thought and clean up the 'wound' first, as I think I may also have wood buried into the paintwork of the car too...I think the fact that it was raining a lot actually went in my favour as the wood was softer....Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!

Lucky you, a species heading towards extinction...keep him fed and watered and keep him in business, blokes like him are worth their weight in gold.0 -
Yeah, just using a touch up pen will be fine. Main thing is to cover any exposed metal quickly so the rust doesn't take hold.0
