Help needed...Mis-sold?

Hi just after a bit of advice on behalf of my parents...after searching the web I still cannot find an answer.
About 15 years ago my step dad took out a buy to let mortgage with HSBC. At the time he was single with no dependents, however he was sold mortgage insurance. Was this really needed? He has been paying £57 a month and recently asked me if I knew what it was for. Does a single person really need insurance? Especially for a buy to let property? He thought this was needed for the mortgage.
Any advice much appreciated!
