Just out of interest how much are you paying with which airline?

Im flying to Hawaii in business with miles and paying £180 - so no where near an economy ticket ( nearly all of that is to leave the UK, tax to leave the US is barely anything).

Last year I used some miles to fly from LA to London and then back to Toronto via JFK. The taxes leaving the US were about £5 or something, and coming back they were £60ish due to our lovely government taxes- with American Airlines. But BA wanted £110ish - if I used my AA miles on one of their planes. It seemed weird to me the taxes were so different, its like theyre making it up!

I used miles via bmi and have been 3 times and each time has been different and depends on the airline and the YQ charges in particular, plus of course the APD from the UK is high. The first time we went with Air NZ and were not charged APD so flights out were under £200 and back was around £25. Next time was also Air NZ but was charged YQ so total was around £400+. This time we used Air Canada and United both who have high YQ and came in about £500.
APD alone for LON - HNL would be £92 economy and £184 in business. New York would be £65 economy and £130 business!
You can check on ITA for the actual taxes
