Can anyone help?

I changed to EDF last year about October time I was 'persuaded' by EDF energy that a £100 a month DD would cover my current usage for both gas and electric on a dual fuel and when I checked my account online it kept showing in credit. I contacted them about it and heard nothing! This happened again a few weeks ago and I emailed again asking if the bill was correct (we have kept them well upto date with both meter readings) I was told I would receive an email once they had looked into it. So the email has arrived and it is telling me that they have only been charging us for gas not the electric and now I have a whopping bill of just short of £500!!! Are they allowed to do this? This is there mistake not mine I am furious we havent been in debt with utilities for approx 5 years!! we stayed on prepayment meters to avoid it until being persuaded by EDF I am very upset and distressed by this I am currently on a temp contract at work and in July will become unemployed if I havent found something else so I could really do without this huge bill!!!! Please can someone help and let me know if they are liable in anyway for there mistake.:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

Hi Trudy - welcome! Firstly, you may wish to edit your post to remove your e-mail address - you may find yourself getting a bit of spam :)
Re your problem - did the online account indicate that it was for both bills? My advice would be to make an "official" complaint to the company. And check the article written by Martin http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/Energy-mis-selling-complaints

Over the course of a year £100/month is a fairly generous amount to pay for dual-fuel, though more heating fuel (normally gas) is used during the winter period and this can appear as a mid-year deficit.

There are various things you need to post if you want meaningful help here. First of all the date of your 'annual review' (ask Edf). Next some brief details about your heating system. Do you know how much energy you consumed monthly during the winter?

The reasons for the above questions are to do with the "£500 bill". If you are a monthly direct debit payer you should not receive a "catch-up" bill until your 'annual review', though it is possible to have the monthly payment hiked, but only to the extent necessary to achieve a "zero balance" at the 'annual review'. Unless there is something strange going on with the billing or meter readings £100/month should be "about right".

There will be clues to the problem on the bill. Post more meter reading details for further advice.

If you have not been billed and you have not hindered or withheld info, the billing code and Ofgems back billing rules prevent them billing anything older than 12 months. They can back bill for up to 12 months though.

They can spread the debt over a payment plan such as 12 months or longer if really needed.

You has PPM's before so you must have a good understanding of how much you would normally pay. Does this stack up to you?

More info is needed though about the kwh side.

Just a thought . . is the £500 bill just for the gas? You may be hundreds of £££s in credit on the electric bill. Have you phoned them, they're normally very helpful.

Edit: oops might have mixed up which fuel is which . . but you get my drift.

EDF set separate rates for your Gas and Electric Direct Debits.

They then combine the two so there is only one "debit" per month however this process can take months.

Sounds like the £100 has been covering your Gas DD only and not the electricity part. Has that put you in "Credit" on the gas side? Could this credit be used for reducing the Electricity part?

Given the price increases £500 might not be that big a bill for 6/7 months over winter but it is a shock to get it all at once.

    Gas usage
    This bill

    48.68 kWh per day

    Electric usage

    This bill

    23.16 kWh per day

?????? Makes no sens to me??

They have only be charging us for gas (even though it should have been electric aswell!!) and we were £488 in credit on that bill?

    so apparently we have used
    £599.04 worth of electric

    and
    £414.19
    worth of gas???

hence this is where the debit balance comes from?? but it is their mistake that they werent billing us for the electric and if they had they would have known that we needed to increase the dd!!! think im going back to prepayment atleast I knew where I was Im just really confused!!!:(:(
