VAX Ruined My Carpet

Options
I had a great VAX machine that developed a fault at the very end of the warranty period, they sent me a replacement of a different machine.

The new machine has ripped holes in my carpet all over the house, it had been building up and I hadn't noticed.

They told me as it's out of warranty they will do nothing.

They told me even if it had been in warranty they would have done nothing.

They told me the damage was caused by not having it on the correct setting when I was using the attachments.

The instructions do not tell you which setting to put it on when using the attachments.

There is high carpet, low carpet and hard floor. We have a very flat pile carpet so I used low carpet.

They told me I should have put it on high carpet to use the attachments and that there is three warnings in the manual telling you they are not responsible to damage to hard flooring due to the ever-rotating brush.

I pointed out that nowhere did it mention any warnings about damage to carpet.

They told me that they didn't put that warning on as 'most people' use the high carpet setting.

I wanted to ring trading standards but they are closed right now. Surely I have some rights as the instruction manual omits important information and instructions.

Nearly every carpet in the house is damaged.

How can you not notice holes in your carpet?

    Not criticising, just curious.

Could you post some photos, and the VAX model that you have. We can then compare the instructions against the actual damage?

OP If it was damaging carpets why continue to use it?
Did the instruction manual not have a section about common sense? By which I mean they usually tell you to test machines/liquids in inconspicuous areas first.

Did you have the hardfloor attachment attached instead of the carpet one?

I think the hardfloor one has hard white bristles.

Still can't see how that would rip the carpet though. What solution did you use?

It clearly states in the user manual that the brushbar continues to rotate whilst using the tools.

I'm afraid you failed to use the machine correctly.

The vax we had when you used the attachments on the hose the brush bar under the vacuum still rotated is that what you mean? If so its a few years since we had it but I remember the warning with it explaining the underneath brush bar still rotated.
  • Every carpet without noticing? I (and VAX and probably a judge) would find this very hard to believe.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • I have experience with this first hand as my mum had the same problem, they stated that in the instruction booklet it stated that you have to adjust the height settings before using attachments.

Luckily, my mum still had the instruction booklet and it was an old version that did not state this important information, she managed to get an entire hall/stairwell/upper-staircase re-carpeted from them.

Do you still have the instruction manual?

Maybe you should have stopped after the first hole?
