My duaghter has just returned from Canada , and said that most places only accepted Mastercard credit cards , as opposed to Visa cards.

We are going to Toronto in September and wish to take a credit card with me , can anyone tell me which one to apply for ?

I am a small wage earne , less than £12000 pa , and will only be using the card when on holiday.

    Help !

I have never found any problems with acceptance of Visa cards in Canada, maybe its a regional thing. There would be no harm in going armed with Visa and Mastercard with 0% loadings for credit card purchases (i.e. Nationwide and Lombard Direct) and a debit card for ATM use to get cash. Don't apply for them too close together though, you may impact your chances of getting them.

Same experience as Gal, never had a problem paying with Visa in Canada and I think it would be highly unlikely in 2005 that a retailer would accept one but not the other.

Much better to ensure you are carrying a card that doesn't charge foreign exchange fees.
