Thanks for all your help. It was an active direct debit that just suddenly stopped for no obvious reason, there was always funds in the bank account when payment was due to go out so its not like the bank stopped it because it bounced or anything. I think after all the input given here I will write to HSBC and the credit card company and see what they both have to say. :) Thanks for your advice everyone :)

My query is why the Direct Debit suddenly stopped being taken (this doesn't happen - Direct Debits do expire, but only after they haven't been taken for a while, they don't just get cancelled out of the blue after regular payments each month), why you didn't notice this and also why you didn't notice the credit card statements informing you you hadn't paid and would be charged £12 a pop.

Nope, DDs don't expire even when they are dormant. It's the responsibility of the bank to remove the DD if it hasn't been used for 13 months. But that's a rule and whether a rule is a requirement is debateable.

In this case I can think of 3 causes for an active direct debit to bounce if there are funds in the account to pay it: The originators reference became corrupted either at the bank or the originator, the bank is in error or there was one or more pending debits to which funds had been applied.

One of my Direct Debits has mysteriously disappeared without warning!

I am not paying anything to the company as I have negotiated a FREE deal but don't know if they are aware / upset that the DD has been deleted.

Also the company is being sold too.

You are clearly a very active poster, so should be aware of how the forums work. Which makes me wonder why you think it is in any way acceptable to resurrect a thread that's not far off a year old to post inane and irrelevant nonsense. If you actually have a question then you should know that starting a new thread is the right thing to do; if you haven't then you're just wasting the time of everybody who decides to read this thread.

You're clearly a very active poster yourself which makes me wonder why you think it's acceptable to be that rude to a fellow forum member.

If you've got any issues you should message a board guide and I'm sure they'll be able to deal with them :)

I don't recognise any of you as regular posters in this part of the forum, so maybe in the places where you post more often resurrecting old threads is the way to do things, but it certainly isn't here unless there is a very direct link between the subject under discussion and what the new post seeks to add. I don't think that is the case here. If you don;t like my response feel free to put me on ignore.

I was told it was a FSA requirement for banks to delete direct debit unused for 13 months. I was told the receipent of the DD would be informed of the deletion, and were supposed to re-set it up if it was still needed. So the receipent is too blame if a payment is missed due to auto-deletion of a direct debit.

I found out that Nationwide Credit Card don't re-setup auto-cancelled direct debits, and their systems still think it is in place. I'm sure they are not the only ones.
It is not the banks that cancel d/d s but the originators, unless asked to do so by customers.

Your bank should be able to tell you who cancelled it - either the originator or customer.
