Hi,
My turbo something went on the car yesterday and left us stuck on the motorway and I don't want to waste more money getting it fixed - even if it can be fixed.
I have had some cars/prices given by a friend who's relation is a mechanic or something with cars - he says he won't sell me a dud :-
Renault Scenic - 54plate, 50K for £1850 (apparantly it has had a new dash which shows 30k sounds a bit odd?)
Citroen c3 1.4, 03 plate had new clutch & cambelt 100k for £1400
Zafira 54plate miles not sure approx 100K for £2000.
Now are these prices good - or am I better off getting a loan and spending about £4000 and going to auction with a mechanic friend of a friend and see if I can get something newer?
My old car is a Zafira W reg - had it for 5 years and cost a good £300-500 a year nearly to keep it on the road with MOT and general repairs. And I would rather pay a bit more and have a less expensive car to run in terms of repairs etc...
Please help as I am lost and desparate for a car (hire car goes back THursday) not bothered about having 7 seats as long as it has a decent boot and 4/5 doors.

If you are happy with the price your friend is going to charge you for the car, then the price is good
Going to auction, even with the best mechanic in the world, is always going to be a risk."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

This was a common Renualt issue where the dash unit failed and had to be replaced.0 -
I see thanks for the clarification... well I might just take him up on one of these then - he says he will let me pay in installements which means I don't need to take out a loan (which is something I have never done before except for the mortgage - touch wood).

Did your mechanic friend help you find your Zafira?
If so, ask another friend.
There are plenty of good cars out there.0 -
Never trust someone trying to sell you a car, even friends/family, make sure you take someone independent to check out the cars.
As for changed dash - fine if you don't want to sell it on but will put people off buying it.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -
To Liam - no bought it somewhere different - but I am put off buying another Zafira as I know all the problems I had with mine and I can't see it being any different with another "old" car.
I am still pondering the whole thing. We don't have the cash to buy a car so I have to either get a loan or pay in installements which this relation of a friend will let me do... but I really don't want to be stuck with a car that needs bearings and callipers and this and that fixing every 6 - 12 months like the Zafira.
Stressed is not the word - we are going on holiday in 10 days and clock is ticking to get something sorted before I have to return the hire car on Thursday.... :-(You're my wife now Dave.......0 -
My zafira has just kept going, but the zafira and the scenic on your list will be needing a cambelt shortly. If you need a car in ten days though, you haven't got much choice, you could buy a good or bad one at the weekend, as you've no time to shop around. C3 is the least of all evils. At least it's had a few hundred pounds of work done on it.0
