Unless you need them running all the time, use the startup tab in msconfig (start, run, msconfig )to disable these items from running at startup (they can always be run manually if needed) . Reboot when done, and select don't show this message again to the prompt you will get.

Install and run ccleaner (untick the google toolbar during the install). Untick the "windows log files" box, under the system heading before cleaning. When you've done all that, reboot, note the commit charge before opening any applications, and post it along with a fresh hijackthis log and any logs of infections

If you haven't all ready done it, Install Malwarebytes and do a FULL (not quick) scan (after updating it), fix anything found before closing, otherwise you'll have to do it all over again. You may get prompted asking if you want to run the free 14 day trial during install, I suggest you decline this offer, as it will slow things down. Closed thanks so much, will action when I get home from work. But, I did do everything in your sticky, including several of the itemas you have reposted above, do I need to redo having uninstalled Norton? I stopped it from working during the work I did last night, but then restarted. I take your point about 2 av's running being a waste of time, but having paid for Norton should I not just stick with it, or is avast actually better?

2 a/v's on a system will conflict with each other and slow it down...avast is certainly lighter on system resources, but if you've paid for norton you may either want to continue with it until your subscription ends or bite the bullet now and swap to avast.....

it's upto you which one you keep, but if your commit charge is high, and system still slow, after following the other steps

xp sp3 + avast can run with a commit charge around 128MB or less, yours is 8x that, mostly bloat.
