What happened to that thing about not investing money you can't afford to lose? Most amateur investors do lose. It may be a fun hobby, but that's not what everybody is looking for. People are easily persuaded to underestimate risk (no, diversification doesn't remove it) and to overestimate their risk tolerance. It's only when people have lost money that they realise they really didn't want to lose it.Over time (and we re talking 5-10 years or more) at least some if not the majority of your money should be in equities (incl andy money you put aside to the children) as over longer time periods equities outperform cash, property and gold."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be.
