Hi everyone,

I’m a little confused so please help if you can.

Me and my partner took out joint cover for decreasing term life insuranceand CIC almost 2 years ago. At the time we took out the policy we were non-smokers. We got accepted with no problems and have been paying every month ever since.

Sadly we have recently started smoking on occasion, when out with friends. I thought of the impact of this and decided I will phone up L&G and let them know of our change of circumstances.

Looking on their website it states … “If you have started smoking since taking out your policy this won't affect your policy or premiums in any way, providing the details you gave at the time you made your application were correct and you continue to pay your premiums”

Does this mean I don’t need to phone them and inform them? I assume not. I don’t understand the last part though. At the time we made our application, we were non-smokers. We had not smoked in the last 12 months. So our application was correct. How could this be proven that it was only about 2 years after the policy was taken out that we started smoking, if we ever needed to claim?

I doubt we will continue tosmoke, only every once in a while, but I would just feel very cross if the worst were to happen and one of us went to claim, and we got turned down, because westarted smoking and couldn’t prove this.

For most providers, the application is a snapshot of now and what is foreseeable. What happens later doesnt matter.

You shouldn't have any concerns unless you have had a history of smoking prior to application. It could look bad even if it doesnt.

I suggest you contact L&G and give them the information in writing and ask for a written response. You then keep the copy letters with the policy document. Or you can go to your IFA and ask them to do it.

  • Thanks for the quick response Dunstonh.
I will write to them to let them know but I still can't see how they can prove we were not smoking when we took out the policy.
If we smoked for the next 10 years, then needed to claim how will they be able to tell from what date the smoking started? Other than out letter confirming when we did?

I know medical science is amazing now days, but can it really tell somone something that accurate?

They cant prove whether or not you did. However if you were to claim they would request Drs notes. So if your Dr has put in his notes that you were smokers prior to taking out the policy then they would likely refuse or reduce any payout.
