Leaving Virgin's sim-only contract?

I have a 30 day rolling sim-only contract with Virgin which renews tomorrow (15th). I want to leave Virgin and get a new contract elsewhere with a new handset included. I've never changed mobile provider before so I'm not sure how to go about it, could someone help please?

I know I have to get a PAC code from Virgin, when would be the best time in the month for me to ring them? Should I ring today as my contract renews tomorrow, even though I don't have the new phone yet?

I will be buying my new phone online so I can get cashback, when the new phone arrives should I put the sim card that comes with it into the phone straight away, or should I wait and give my new provider the PAC from Virgin first?

Thanks for that but I don't plan on staying with Virgin as I want to get the Samsung Galaxy Note and I don't think they sell it!

Get your pac today, order the new phone and when that comes give the new network your pac. Use your old sim until the number transfer has been done so you're not without service.

In a very similar situation myself as I will be leaving Virgin to get a Note with someone else. Did you get a good deal on the Note?

Thanks, I was expecting problems with Virgin as I'd heard about their poor customer service but they gave me the PAC straight away over the phone :)

I haven't ordered yet but I'm thinking about this as I don't need many minutes but I fancied free wi-fi http://www.buymobilephones.net/mobile-phones/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-Note/O2/O2-100-(24mths)-Internet-All-Rounder/11756384 If you see anything better, let me know ;)

I'd seen this one but it's not quite enough minutes for me. I usually stay under 100 but 200 would be more comfortable. I'm coming up to my last month with Virgin and have been checking on https://www.mobilephonechecker.co.uk for good deals. It's very useful as you can tailor it to your exact needs and it gives you the best deals.
