Getting married in the Lake District - ideas please

My OH and I have been together for 16 years and would like to get married. Neither of us wants a big do with all the fuss and expense that comes with it, but do want the day to be more special than just turning up at the local registry office. We’d also like to give our close family (which is only 9 people on top of the two of us) the opportunity to come along as well.

I’ve always discounted the registry office as somewhere to get married because the local one is just not very nice and has some bad memories for my family from my brother’s first wedding which was a bit of a disaster to be honest. The lack of fuss of this kind of service does fit the bill though. So, I’ve been wondering about doing it at a different registry office and quite fancy the Lake District. Does anyone have any experience of LD registry office weddings? Are there any that are in nice old buildings that would look good on photos? What about a nice place to stay or go for a meal after?
Any ideas gratefully received!

Hi, I grew up in the lakes. it is a beautiful place. As far as I am aware though registry offices are few and far between. There is one in Kendal, which is ok but not beautiful at all. I think there may be one in Penrith and then Carlisle. If I were you I would look towards hotels. There is a list of licensed places on the registry office site I think. You may find some will be really pleased to have a small wedding party. Favourite places I have include miller Howe (amazing afternoon tea with stunning views of lake Windermere) and I would try the samling if you want a very exclusive but lovely day. If you want any other help pm me!

hi i live in the lake district and im planning my wedding here (although mine will be the church).
if its a small but beautiful place you'd like broad oaks country house is divine!, you can even get married under their little archway in the gardens.
i was told they can hold up to 100 but can cater for as little as you'd like.

hope this helps some and if youd like to pick the brain of a local on anything let me know :-)
wedding planning again, this time nothing will stop me :-):A

Thanks very much to both of you, I will have a look through these. Haven't mentioned the lakes to the OH, we've been engaged for years and never been bothered about getting married. Recently we've talked about it a bit though, we want to do it to protect each other for pensions and that kind of thing really. He'd be happy to just sign a few forms and that would be it, whereas I'd like it to be more than get up, go to Sainsburys, get married, have tea :rotfl:. So he's suggested I have a look around and I'm trying to find something very small and not fussy that still feels special :).

If you fancy something a little bit different and quirky some friends of mine got married here

fab scenery and setting....nearest town Coniston.

P.S. I was at Miller Howe a little while back and must say it was very disappointing, not a patch on what it used to be! Stuffy, pretentious and quite frankly grubby (cobwebs everywhere!) But the gardens and the setting are beautiful.

What a shame about miller Howe. The coppermines will be great, Coniston is lovely. I know a guy who runs outdoor type things over there, maybe you could persuade your oh with a spot of paintballing? He he.

what about brantfell, ruskins house on Coniston, followed by a boat ride? Or ullswater steamers do similar.

Why not hire a steamer to have your wedding tea party on?
