Bonus in Bag or not !!!

Wasn't sure where to put this? I have found cheques from 2009. Most of them are from insurance companies or for bank dividends. How do I try and get the money? They are all for amounts between £6 and £25. I can't believe it - I found them in an old handbag. There are six of them.

You would need to ask the companies that sent them to reissue new ones to you

A cheque is “legally” valid for six years, however Banks do have an agreement that cheques over six months old are deemed “stale”, and if spotted should not be accepted. As these are small amounts from companies, if you paid them in and your branch did not notice the dates on them they would probably get paid.

However be aware that most company account departments review their statements and place stops on cheques over six months old that have not been presented for payment. So as the previous poster has said, it is best to contact the company and ask them to reissue new cheques to you.

First find out what, if anything, they will charge for re-issuing a cheque. It is not their fault that you did not cash them and it will cost them to re-issue. You may find that any charges make it pointless to claim.

With dividend cheques they do tend to state how long they are valid for e.g. 3/6/12 months. If they are over 6 months old as a rule you would be best to contact the company and ask them to replace the cheques for you.
