Dunno - according to OFCOM, there aren't any numbers beginning 027...

That number looks like it is from South Africa. The South African country code is 27 and Johannesburg is 11. So if you are ringing a Jo'burg number, it will be 00 27 11 etc. That number looks similar. Hope this helps.

Maybe a bit obvious, but does your daughter recognise it?

As the 027 code has not yet been used in the UK and as the idea of adding a zero at he front to make it a RSA number has blown out, it must be a false CLI.

That means it's likely to be someone you don't want to talk to anyway so, when the number shows up on your CLI display in future, ignore it or let your answering machine pick up the call.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I have had 3 calls from another weird number today 001925555601 claiming to be from orange offering me a free phone upgrade but trying to scam my personal details (can you confirm your mothers maiden name and date of birth etc etc for security reasons before we send you your new phone blah blah blah !) and now have also had a missed call from the number you mention 0271203600 so i guess this is also the same scammers after personal info for identity theft etc - hope this helps - I think it was the line "how are you today darling" that set the alarm bells ringing that this wasn't a genuine call from Orange
