Smoke isn't too bad - I once bought an old car that had ended-up being used as a farm car and put it back on the road. It didn't smell too bad from cold (serves me right for looking at it first thing in the morning) but once it heated-up - PEW! Took flaming ages and several complete wash-outs to get the stench of sheep out of it!

As above, bicarb is good. :)

I think if people smoke in their cars, they should say so when selling it. It's a choice to smoke in the car, thus they should pay the price.

Sorry but what a load of nonsense. If it is that much of an issue to the buyer, then they should ask the question.

A bowl of disinfectant an a big sponge.

Scrub everything, I bought a car off a couple that chain smoked. It was awful.

But the silly price i offered must have been better than the other offers they had.

I spent 3 days scrubbing it, the water was disgusting.

stail milk smell is harder to remove than smoke IMHO.

change the pollen filter too, you be suprised how much smoke can be recurculated in the cab with that feature selected on the heater vents.

smoke will get pushed into the foam padding in the seats through the cloth when wet stuff is placed on cloth seats and door cards get wet.

an anti bacterial wash is due in persistant odors too, and sponge down all the seatbelts pull them out and scrub them down untill you see no tobacco residue on the cloth micro fiblre is best on seatbelt meterial.

windscreens and windows, i use white vinegar (not cider vinegar) on a real leather chamois and a newspaper page to clean and buff the window to remove smears and stains.

parcel shelfs i get out damp down dry them out slowly and then may touch up with some black matt spray paint to keep it looking brand new.

rear bench seats can often be removed form a car, either clips or some screws hold them in place, i take mine out, scrub the panel under neath with a nicely smelling fabric softer on the carpet, then onto the seat itself, i will hoover in the house vigorously untill bits are out of the fabric if stained, ill get the vax on it and wet clean it, if not then ill damp a cloth with antibacterial and scrub it.

i steam clean my headlining, it makes life easier on the arms and the carpets.

then to keep the car smelling fresh i put some tumble dryer sheets under the drivers and passengers side seats where the heaters are and attach the sheet over the vent with some stickytape as if to make a felixible flap on it. heat makes those sheets smell so when the heaters are on your pumping a nice smell around the cab.

with leather rejuvinating creams they often neutralizes the smell in leather, mer leather cleaner smells ok, meguirs leather care is good too

Oh yes milk.. Many years ago i spilt a bottle of pasturised milk in the rear footwell of my car.

In the end i havd to remove the carpet and hose it down in the garden.

I left it there for WEEKS... It still smelt the day after i washed it.

    Eventually the smell cleared.

I would use Autoglym Odour Eliminator, sprayed onto all the fabric (carpets, seats, boot mat etc.) Give it 24 hours to work, then use Autoglym Autofresh and no more nasty smoke smells.

Thanks ScotsBob - just bought the Autoglym Odour Eliminator, sprayed most of the car. Also bought an air freshener. So far so good, car smells MUCH better. Let's see how long it lasts!

I once had a car with a smoke smell that would seep through when air con/fans were on. I got my hands on a spray thing that cleans out your air con unit. What i had to do was get the engine running with aircon on full, stand the can in the car and leave it for 10 minutes, with the doors shut (you have to be outside the car) and it seemed to solve the issue from within the air vents...

Agree. I'm selling a car now, but if I decided to take a sh*t on the back seat and leave it there, it would be fair for the buyer to expect me to have mentioned it in the advert.

Also worth checking that it's not on fire.
    Can I help?

    Check out "Ozone producers".
Basically, an electrical device that produces ozone, which is highly oxidising and effectively "burns off" all the organic matter in the car, including smoke particles. It's what they use to properly de-smoke houses after fires, and you can hire them from tool hire places. My car smells a bit of smoke and I was looking into getting one, but it's fading bit by bit and after a pollen filter change I'm sure it'll be fine.
