STA Travel Insurance Claim

Hey guys,

I'm going to claim on my STA travel insurance because I had booked a holiday for three months to go to Cambodia and teach English in a school there. It cost me £2650 for the trip, plus flights.

After two weeks though, my partner (who I was travelling with) got the news that his dad was seriously ill in hospital. We both flew back the same day.

My partner is claiming his money back (at the very least his return flight home), but I was wondering how likely I was to claim mine back too - seeing as I'm not a direct member of his family?

When I rang STA (or ISIS) they said that I should submit a claim anyway and they would consider it. I'm about to do that, however I was wondering if there was anything which I should put in my letter accompanying the claim form?

I have been with my parter for two years, and would never have considered staying out there without him. I've known his dad this long too, and for the past year have been living with his family. Do you think this is all relevant?

Thanks,

Amy

Did you make the booking together or as 2 individuals?

By partner do you mean on off boyfriend? live in boyfriend? fiance? common law husband? husband?

We made the bookings together for the flights, and separately for the actual holiday (although the company were fully aware that we were together and were providing us with a room to share), as we each paid our share separately.

By partner I mean live-in boyfriend of 2 years.

    Thanks!

I wouldnt imagine there would be a problem.... with the decline of marrage (and the joys that is political correctness) "common law" partners (I know the term has almost no meaning anymore but it would be what you are if you have lived together as man and wife for 2 years) are treated virtually the same as married couples - too easy for someone to turn round and say they are being discriminated against because they religiously/ ethically/ culturally do not believe in marrage.

Was the insurance taken out in joint names or individually? The only issues I can see is the fact that some parts have been done as individuals and therefore arguable that you are not that "close" - most couples will book things together when they are both going in joint names rather than individually.

What does the relevant section of the policy (Curtailment section) say? - there can be various definitions, but you may not have to be related at all - does the policy wording refer to cutting the holiday short due to illness of a family member of the policyholder (you) or that of any 'travelling companions'...?
