Irish ferries

Any body else think that £350 is a bit steep for a car and 2 people to go from Holyhead to Dublin. I just booked a trip for my parents who had to go last week and I'm thinking of going away on Holiday soon and as my passport hasn't turned up I thought Ireland. What with fuel etc I'll have spent £500 plus pounds and we haven't even started on Accom and eating and drinking. and in Ireland that's when the expense really starts!

Hi shaunandelly!
It depends, the £350 you paid for the ticket for your mum, is it for the weekend? Is it on the fast ferry? (the Swift tends to be more expensive because of it's faster) Does she has VIP Lounge seats too?
We recently booked ours through http://www.aferry.co.uk/ferry-to-ireland-irish-ferries-uk.htm , I just checked now and they have a £79 each way but it depends what dates you are looking for. I looked through loads of websites forst comparingnthe prices, you will find that sometimes the operator directly is alot cheaper and others that is more expensive. For example I wanted to book Britanny Ferries to Frace, and the price was £600++ , then visited an agennts website and it was at least £200 cheaper- I dont remember which one it was tho,it was a long time ago.
I think you can go to Ireland without needing a passport if you are a British citizen, I haven't ever had mine checked. Well I have only been there a couple of times. But it is always best to be on the safe side.
My advise is to look at all the websites and do alot of research!

As long as you have some form of ID, I know that for a fact, because we got stopped coming back from Ireland to Wales by port police, I guess, they are that, and had to show ID, I guess it's not the norm, but just saying

How long you going away for anyway? Will you staying in a b&b or thinking about staying in a cottage? If you are staying in a cottage, I would recommend Imagine Ireland as I've booked (and I'm booked) with them in the past and for Spetember, as they did the ferry cost in the cottage.
Also, I looked at the ferry prices and it was cheaper midweek? The Very Right Honourable Lady Tarry of the Alphabetty thread-I just love finding bargains and saving moneyI love to travel as much as I can when I canLife has a way to test you, it's how you deal with this that matters0 -
At the moment I'm sitting waiting to se if the passport turns up. I have to to travel at the weekend unfortunately. I'll have a look at the imagine ireland. Probably will do a cottage, although the idea of tramming about from one b&B to the other appeals as you get to experience more I think. A driving licence will do for Ireland on the Ferry if required so away we go......Still got the fingers crossed for an all inclusive in Gran Canaria though.0

I have always wanted to book a cottage through Imagine Ireland they make them look so nice! I need to save some money first (says whilst checking diary haha)
Yes I had a look too , midweek is cheaper but if you are gonig to travel on the weekend they seems to be cheapest on the crossings that are on antisocial hours (the ridiculous am ones : 3:25 etc) . If you can bare it and think its worth it,if it saves a reasonable ammount of money, I would do it!
Good luck! We’re separate, two ghosts in one mirror, no nearer

They are good, I do recommend them
The cottages I've stayed with so far, have been really good
I'm booked into one in September and hopefully it will be as good as the ones I've stayed in before. I tend to travel outside peak season due to my work first of all, and secondly the price, and also I like to have irregular weeks, ie, I tend to start on Sunday, and end on a Friday, so almost 2 weeks (ie, not the first Friday, but the next one) and they allow me to do, and they allow me to pay my balance of when I want too
In regards to the night crossings, although cheaper they are a killer, I went on one, and willed never again, so tend to cross during the day
Learnt the hard way, that they are not fun

If you have a driving licence that's ok as ID, or was for the case with whom I was with. Like I said, it's not the norm to get stopped but we did
In regards to renting a cottage, it works out cheaper as when I go over, I tend to explore the neighbouring counties and the county I'm in as opposed to tour around Ireland, I like a homebase too much to come home too
I am travelling on a Sunday on the ferry on a Sunday, so through II, it was £250 or so, but still saying a bit of money according to the ferry website that quoted me a lot more. The faster ferry is more expensive, but never bothered with it, because why pay more if it stands a chance of getting cancelled due to the weather? The Very Right Honourable Lady Tarry of the Alphabetty thread-I just love finding bargains and saving moneyI love to travel as much as I can when I canLife has a way to test you, it's how you deal with this that matters0 -
Rang Imagine Ireland up yesterday and the Ferry fares if booked through them as a combo package are nearly £100 cheaper. Which is where I expected the price to seems to be. "Fleece the unwary" seems to be the mantra of every business these days.
There is a very nice looking cottage in Ballydehob with a hot tub and their own Collie and Ladrador dogs trot out for walks with you! Unfortunately not on Imagine Ireland's books.0 -
That's what I found too, so much cheaper. I know why it's expensive, but when you are used to booked £24 poferries deals, it's quite a jump, but obviously, it's not as competive route, and it's a lot longer.
Anyway, hope you find something you like
