parking while at work.

I work part time and where I work is situated a public park with limited free public parking. Until recently staff have been allowed to park within sight of the building along side visitors. At busy times we parked else where; to allow the public access to the space available. At the begining of the month there has been an email directing all staff parking is to be in an area out of sight some 200 yards away from the building where there is no direct line of sight and screened by trees and a unused building. No response has been made to a colleagues query. I would like to know wether I and my colleagues can ignore this directive, wether my employers can actually prevent me parking where I used to as it is still available to the general public and to the coffee shop staff who are employed by a different company. The staff cars amount to 7 - 8 out of some 30 places available.

Does the car park belong to your employer?

If so, I think you'll find that he can manage his car park how he likes.
He could even ban all employee's cars from the car park.

Of course if you have a formal agreement in place, he should only change that following negotiation.

Perhaps your employer doesn't like you looking out the window at the cars, and found the easiest solution is to move the cars.

Sorry, why do you need to be in sight of the cars?

Perhaps your employer is being a knob and doesn't like you looking out the window at the cars, as he's been told a pack of lies (by someone trying to get a promotion), that this stops you doing any work and found the easiest solution is to move the cars.

Had to fix that for you :o

They can if they own the public park. Especially if your employers are the local council.

Surely it's considerate to park further away, so that customers and clients can have the spaces nearer to the building?

Probably all the clients are fed up getting wet recently, and the coffee shop had no customers, while the visitors bays are full of staff cars.(Strider, you been passed over for a promotion again?)

If its their car park they can do what they like. Surprised that they haven't reminded you what a perk a free space (even if you can't keep your eyes on it all shift) is. Remember there is a heirarchy when it comes to valuables. With car parking it is disabled first, customers next, then senior management and then and only then, space for the plebs.
Reminds me of an obnoxious tenant who (for their 1/20 of the building) expected 5 free parking spaces. One Monday I turned up and he had went to the expense of painting his company details over the 5 spaces nearest the main door. How I laughed when I told him I was charging him for the damage and not renewing his lease.
  • What kind of car do you have if you want to keep an eye on it at all times?!

Maybe the Ferrari wasn't the best choice :)

If it really is a public parking area, you could perhaps set up an anonymous hotmail account and then e-mail everybody just to let them know that YOU'RE ENTITLED TO PARK WHERE THE *!%# YOU LIKE, providing it's in accordance with the law and not on their land. Maybe they don't understand the concept of the various highways legislation etc. Sounds like your employer is taking a liberty, using its power over staff for its own gain (just wants a pretty view from the office, unspoilt by a view of parked cars? Maybe some HR bod has a bee in her bonnet abou the view from her office or something?). It's not actually that different in principle from them insisting that you all move the chairs in your home living rooms so that they're all facing in a north-easterly direction, just because they like it that way.
