After an oil and filter change by a garage, where would you expect the dipstick to show the oil level?

Max?
Min?
Somewhere between the two?

Seriously? So 0.5mm off min and an inch from the top and you'd be happy with that?

Should be within a mm. of max. - if not it's a sign of sloppy workmanship.

Agreed, if they can't get something that simple right what else have they not looked at properly ?

They've also probably invoiced for the full sump plus filter capacity, so if it's not at the maximum mark then there's been an overcharge on the bill?! Even just a half litre per car, then over time the extra profit will accumulate.
Max, on level ground about 5 - 10 minutes after the engine has been stopped.
  • Hi,

you'll get a lower level if checking from cold and higher after having been a run.

    Hi,

you'll get a lower level if checking from cold and higher after having been a run.

The difference in volume between hot and cold will be miniscule and with todays low viscosity oils 0W/20, 5W/30 etc even more so. The cold level would probably be higher because ALL the oil has drained to the sump. Most manufacturers advise 5 -10 minutes after stopping which gives time for the bulk of the oil in circulation to drain back to the sump and maintains consistency of checking.
It wouldn't surprise me if the oil has been filled to max without allowance for the filter, now it's below max. after running.
The OP doesn't actually state what the level is, only asks a question without supplying any information.
