Hi folks, I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro P20017C laptop which I have had for about 4 years now, and I am having a few issues with it. I updated to W7 Ultimate (unofficial copy) about 18 months ago, never had an issue until recently, where the laptop will just freeze completely, sometimes it will unfreeze itself, sometimes it will go to a blue screen and say it is crash dumping memory. Anyone any ideas? The only way I can get it off that screen or unfrozen if I am in a hurry it to turn it off at the on/off button. I am hpoing it isn't something terminal as I have really looked after the machine, it cost me about £600 new and when it behaves itself is a fantastic machine, it's just sometimes it's unusable due to the freezing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated from someone who knows about this kind of thing as I have no clue!

Do you have your important data backed up?
Which BIOS version are you running? If not 2.70WIN, then you may need to update the BIOS.
It's here.
Download and save to the laptop and extract the contents into a newly created folder. Then run the application as Administrator
But don't do it until we have resolved the matter of your data.
A clean install will have to occur, as you cannot expect support for unlicenced software. Especially when we don't know which method was used for activation.
For all we know, that could be the cause.
So we will eliminate that possibility in due course.0 -
Cheers, will look into that when I have the time to backup. I have approx 30GB of data, will need to weed through what I need and what I don't. It seems to be behaving since I did a windows update, so fingers crossed. But the BIOS is outdated, I checked. Thanks again

For "unofficial", read "illegal". You're in violation of the terms of the EULA. It is illegal for Individual users to copy or possess Microsoft software without proper licensing.0 -

May I suggest that you do the backup now. Just back it all up on to an external drive. Then you can take your time to weed through at a later date.
Then it will be time for a clean install and then to update the BIOS. Don't want to attempt to update the BIOS with a corrupted copy of Windows.
Better to do it with a known quantity. Then we can take care of the licence.
If you don't listen and get this done asap, we will not be helping you in the future.0 -
A clean install should fix the blue screens. Try a system restore first. As TakeThis said, do the backup NOW. Its just 30gb. Will take you a few mins to copy it all, may take you hours to sort out.Living off £450 per month is easy...! If you aren't single! :j0

A little strong there Waddler, I know nothing about computers, I simply got my mate to update it, it has an activation key apparantly so I very much doubt illegal!!
And thankyou TakeThis for the demand that I do this NOW!!! otherwise "we" won't be helping again, well if thats the terms of the help i'l go elsewhere thanks!
I don't have the time to do this at the moment, nor do I have the money to buy an external drive until payday.CC limits £26000

They're not trying to be harsh, just don't expect sympathy when you lose all your data because you didn't back up when advised. Everything should ALREADY be backed up, you should have been doing this from the first day you got your computer. It's still baffles me that people don't if they have any relatively important data on their computer.
Second, there are no unofficial copies of Windows. They're official, or they're illegal. If your friend has put Windows 7 Ultimate on your computer (and not charged you £150 for the privilege), it's most likely illegal, or you have a VERY generous friend.0 -

So why are you still here?
My point is, if you come here again, when/if you have problems with your illegally activated copy of Windows 7. I assume your friend has used a Loader. No one will be keen of helping you when you had the opportunity to fix that problem once and for all.
So if you want to go elsewhere, be my guest.
If you want to work with the best for free, you don't get to choose when. I'm on holiday and my time is precious.
Is your hard drive partitioned? Likely it is, so you can move your data to the D drive for now.
You can have this wrapped up in a day....or you can just find someone who will help you to maintain your pirated software.0
