Android Contacts and GMAIL app

Ok this has been driving me nuts.
I recently purchased a car which accesses my phonebook on my Android phone. Brilliant - except I have to search through 100s of contacts to get to the person I want - most of these are e-mail contacts from GMail.
I've factory resetted my phone and only added the contacts I want which is great but now I can't use my GMail app because if I do it automatically syncs my contacts from GMail.
Any ideas how I stop it doing this!?!

You can stop Syncing.
Go to Settings (usually pressing Menu button and Settings) -> Accounts & Sync.... Turn off Auto-sync. My gmail isn't in there though. My facebook is.0 -

Tried that but most of the apps won't work if you turn off auto synch.
Didn't realise there was a seperate Mail app, using that now and deleting Gmail.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -
