I'm going to look at an allotment tomorrow! Apparently it needs a lot of work.

Hoping I will be able to get some of it cleared in time to get some thing grown this year :)

That's great, don't be disheartened though if it needs lots doing, get seeds planted at home to get them started and try get help to get digging it over and clearing it you'd be amazed at what can be achieved in a few weekends :)

    Congratulations AnGee :j
I can remember the excitement when we got ours.
the best advice I can give you is
You can't eat an elephant in one sitting !
    Small bites.
Like Foxy says don't be disheartened, it's surprising what can be achieved and you'll get some produce going.
    Most of all enjoy :)
  • Congrats! Your so lucky - there are really long waiting lists around here which is so disappointing when you walk past and a lot seem to just be overgrown messes.

I know what you mean ,our site has a few. It's worth contacting your council and pestering.I used to phone up regularly.
Now our site is self-managed but I'd still encourage people to politely pester.Show you are keen it may help.Good luck :)

You lucky thing I been waiting 3 years in June and I am 65 in list to get one I moved one place in a 10 months. I have almost given up of ever having one as when I do I be too old. I tried contacting council and local councillor who deals with allotments. My neighbour knows someone who has 3 on allotments where I want to go, and he struggles to keep them going, its damn unfair but nowt they can do. I am seriously thinking of moving to get a bigger garden its not the main reason I want to move its up high up on list

Thanks for the replies. I'll be on here looking for lots of help and advice I'm sure!

I feel guilty now, as I was only waiting for about 8 months. I waited for years when we lived in Hertfordshire and never got one.

Snap, I went on the on the waiting list in about July/August last year I nagged and nagged many emails were exchanged, I got offered an allotment in march this year then on 1st April this year got offered a 2nd allotment on a different site a stones throw from our house. We still have both at present but am seriously considering giving the 1st one we got up, we've done so much work on both of them someone is going to get a very nice plot with some veg planted ready for them

I still have lots of thinking to do regards my situation :o

Ooh, our site has just gone self managed - whereabouts are you? I'm up on the sunny Lancashire coast.

I just gave mine up reluctantly this year. I hurt my back and just can't dig this year, and it's better to let someone have it who could get some yield from it.
My only advice....... get yourself a digging hoe. Mine cost about a tenner, and it's the best thing I ever bought. Clears a big area in no time at all! I'm lucky to have space for veg patches in the garden, so will concentrate on that this year.
Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...
