Halifax- Apply today for your Guaranteed credit card

Is the card actually guarenteed?
This offer appears on my online banking page.

On the next page it says:
'Apply today and we guarantee we’ll accept your application.*'
'
*Please note that the guaranteed offer is only available to selected customers who have recieved a personal invite. It is only available for a limited period and it will be removed from your online offers when it has expired. If you have accessed this offer or received this page through any other means then your application will be declined.'

Surely this means that is is guarenteed as I recieved the offer?

Thanks :)

  • I had the same message, applied last week, and got the paperwork a couple of days later. It means you are guaranteed acceptance, but not guaranteed the best rate or longest 0% offer, that will all depend on your application etc.

That sounds good. I think I will apply as I intend to pay it off at the end of the month every month.

I don't know why they have offered me it as they rejected me for the student credit card last year when I applied. I had asked here not to long ago and some people were saying that nobody would offer me a credit card.

    Thanks :)

What you are benefiting from here is your personal relationship with the bank.

I'm guessing you have run your accounts well. You've been with them a year longer. You may have increased your savings balance, demonstrating an ability to meet the payments on a credit product.

Rate and credit limit are the key variables that they've not committed to. But it certainly gives you a start.

They used to have a "providing your circumstances haven't changed recently" wording on the offer page. Is that still the case? If so, its not in the bag yet!

If and when the agreement comes, take a look at the footer on the page you sign. At the left hand side it'll show your credit limit without a currency sign, ie 2500.

Well my circumstances haven't really changed at all. I have a £2000 0% overdraft on my current account. I have around £7.5k in two ISAs. I have the same income, basically £0, though I do get around £5.5k from loans and grants plus £3.5k tuition fee loans if you count that.

I can't see that wording. My circumstances haven't changed though.
Think I will apply and wait and see what happens.

    Thanks guys :)

I have applied today and it said that I would get a decision in ten (working?) days.
Hmmm, you would think with a guarenteed card they would tell you straight away??

Happened to me as well in January this year. Got refered as usual.

Spoke to their customer advisor who then spoke to underwriters and my application was accepted within matter of minutes over the phone.

Basically if you apply on-line for one of their guaranteed cards, application gets treated as normal application with full credit search. However if you ring Halifax, they normally transfer you to guaranteed credit card helpline where they open an account for you without conducting a full search.

I'd advise you ring them and explain. Also they can advise you of your pre-approved limit which is not guaranteed until you sign and return the agreement back but nearly all the times, this is the limit you get.

    Is that a recent change?

Reason I ask is that I've had 4 or 5 'guaranteed' cards over the last few years (the last one being 13 months ago) and have never had a full credit search done.

Each time I've been given an instant accept online.

I applied in Jan this year and it was certainly the case then. Infact they have some bug where their system records 2 searches for 1 application.

If I remember correctly, even if you are applying for guaranteed credit card by clicking the advert, a new window pops up and none of the details are populated.

Unlike if you apply for personal loan, then all you have to do is confirm that you are still employed and no new window pops up. And in my case no search was recorded either. The whole process was similar to increasing overdraft online.
