What a terrible situation. I would fully explain the reasons for missing the payment to your landlady, you sound very genuine and if you're a good tenant she won't want to lose you.
Definitely worth speaking to your bank too. But don't go anywhere near those payday loans, you'll be in a terrible cycle of debt if you do that.
You never know, your husband could have moved the money, it's worth a round about ask. But like someone else says, the reaction you got from your nephew screams guilt.
