The number of pages makes almost no difference as once you've created the couple of templates needed for the site then plugging in content is a very easy job.

What is more important is any functionality that you may require? Do you have logos etc or do these need to be designed too? Have you a target budget?

Use wordpress - it is easy to use and you can set up a functional website/blog with it without the need to pay designers. Websites can be set up and hosted by people who create websites and repair computers. Both my sites are wordpress sites and they are so easy to change when I feel like it and I am not a computer whizz by any stretch of the imagination.

If you want logos then buy them from places such as istock.com - far better to do this yourself than use a designer who could end up charging your £250 plus VAT for a £6 logo:mad:

Would you cut your own hair because you own a pair of scissors?

Service your own car because you have a spanner?

If you want a professional logo or website, and you want it to convey a certain message or meaning, then paying a good designer can pay dividends.

(I'm not a designer, nor do I have any vested interest. Just find it an odd attitude.)

But its the internet, everyone can do it. A cracked copy of dreamweaver, MS Paint and a few issues of PC Format and you'll be challenging Amazon in weeks!

Actually I have serviced my own cars in the past, however, cars have electronic gadgetary now so it is no longer the easy task it once was - yes, I still have a complete set of spanners.

My attitude isnt odd in the slightest. Last year I forked out for a unique logo for a new business venture - I discovered a few weeks' ago now that the logo provided wasn't as unique as I was led to believe and was in fact an istock image costing £6.05 - I had been charged £250 plus VAT:mad: Needless to say I cannot use the image because I am not licensed to use it plus there is a business near me using the exact same one which is how I found out that the image was not unique. Therefore, had I realised that the image was from istock then I would have purchased it directly myself and saved myself the bother and the expense. Sometimes it is possible to get a professional image without resorting to spending large amounts of money with graphic designers who may have a propensity to rip you off!

Just as some garages will say X, Y & Z needed replacing on your car and show you some rusty old parts to "prove" they've done it when in reality they didnt replace anything and those bits have been sat out the back of the workshop for months.

There are high and low costs options for everything. There are scammers and geniuine companies in all spaces too.

With the interent however there is a massively lower level of respect for the skill/ knowledge/ effort it takes -v- other similar professions.

The situation you describe is not common. It's like saying that every builder must be a cowboy because a small proportion are.

My logo and website design cost less than £300 and was designed from scratch. It is unique, we had control over every aspect and the choice of a few dozen logos. We're very very happy with it. Your experience doesn't alter that.
