Attending an AGM

I'm sure this is a blindingly stupid question, but I'll risk it anyway.

As many of us do I own shares in various companies via Hargreaves Lansdown. One of these of these has their 2012 AGM coming up and I'm interested in attending.

So, what is the process?!? If I want to vote on an issue I'm assuming I need to prove that I am indeed a shareholder- how do I do that?

I did run a search for "AGM" but nothing helpful came up.

Thanks in advance,

Op.

[STRIKE]Those holding shares via a nominee account are not eligible to vote. To do that you'll need a Crest account in your own individual name holding the shares or actual share certificates.[/STRIKE]

Interesting that the FT today had a story saying what I wrote based on that story... :)

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm assuming opening(?) a Crest account would also mean transferring from H&L? I assume I can still attend the AGM, just not vote?

. I hold a number of shares in an nominee account with The Share Centre, but I do not get the opportunity to vote at AGM's etc - how can I acquire these rights?
Having spoken with The Share Centre, you are still able to attend AGMs and vote when you hold shares in a nominee account. In order to do this you must log on to your account through the Share Centre webpage and any relevant events will appear here. The Share centre will not notify you of an upcoming event or vote so you must check your account on a regular basis. Their customer service line will be able to help.
Ring HL. Although the above relates to The share Centre the procedure is likely to be similar.

Brilliant- thank you. I didn't even think about calling H&L. D'oh!

Putting "hargreaves lansdown" and "voting" into a Google search finds
    https://www.hl.co.uk/shares/corporate-actions/corporate_action_frequently_asked_questions

"How do I attend and/or vote at a Company Meeting?

If you wish to attend a meeting and vote you can be appointed as a proxy by Hargreaves Lansdown Nominees Limited and attend and vote in respect of your holding held on your behalf by Hargreaves Lansdown Nominees Limited. A request to be appointed proxy can be sent to Hargreaves Lansdown by email or post. Alternatively, if you wish to vote without attending the meeting you can send (by email or post) a voting instruction to Hargreaves Lansdown and your vote will be forwarded to the Company."

Just wondering, have anyone been to AGM? Generally, what they do or tell you apart from voting on resolutions which are virtually to be approved. I suppose you could ask them questions and discuss some issues but that it?

    Cheers

A good friend of mine always attends the AGM of a well-known brewery. However, he is somewhat hazy when I ask him about his voting habits.   :rotfl:

I understand that some AGMs are also very popular with some retired investors due to the rather nice lunch that is laid on afterwards!

You can certainly better judge the quality of whoever is running the companies you invest in by meeting them in person. The CEO of one company I held looked reasonable enough in the annual report but was worryingly unimpressive at the AGM. I sold the lot the following day.

Haven't been to an AGM for a while but you usually end up with a bag of goodies of variable usefulness. Quite what they expect you to do with those baseball caps with their name on them that they seem to think you'll treasure I'm not sure.

Sorry for reviving this thread but just want to say thanks for it's existence - let me explain.

I recently moved all my RSA share certificates into HL. RSA AGM is on 9th May. I rang up HL asking where my meeting notice and proxy form was. The call handler told me HL would vote on my direction but as my shares were held through them I wouldn't be able to attend in person. At first I accepted this. As you do.

However after reflection I browsed MSE and found this thread which revealed that I can attend. Armed with this I rang HL again - different call handler of course - who confirmed that for £10 they will issue me with the necessary paper work.

    So thanks MSE.
