Backing up XP problem - how to create system recovery disc

I am wanting to create a full backup of my XP laptop using the XP back up wizard functionality. I connected my external drive which aleady had a number of files and data backups. I selected the option "All information on the computer" option so I could create a system recovery disc.
The wizard then proceeded to start the back up. I was amazed that initially said it would take 24 hours. this later reduced to 14 hours but it still said 13 hours, 6 hours after the back up started. I noticed that the filenames displayed as being backed up were back up files already on my external hard. The wizard was backing up the contents of my external drive. Unfortunately the backup did not complete and for some reason cancelled itself.
I want to do it again. If I used the wizard option of "let me choose" what do I need to select so I can also create a system recovery disc to use if the worse should happen to my computer.
I have read the sticky on backing up but it does not seem to answer my question. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
