Thank you all for the replies, and the links to other sites.
bryanb like most other big cities there are bound to be pickpockets, I've travelled in India, Eastern Europe etc and as long as one uses common sense, a cross-body bag and as moneysavvy said you carry yourself confidently there shouldn't be any problem.
markwilkinson it isn't too personal a question, very sensible as many cities are hilly (ie Rome) or otherwise difficult to get around. I have a lung disease so my walking is limited to a very slow couple of hundred yards, hence my wanting to be near the centre of the city. I'm happy to take public transport which with a local timetable/route map I'm sure I'll manage. Air con in my room is a definite, I appreciate it will be pretty warm even at the end of Sept.
Budget - preferably as cheap as chips! Started by looking at hostels but very few have a single room and mostly shared bathrooms so that's out. Stepping up to 1 & 2star will have to look at all the reviews carefully but am confident I'll find somewhere clean in my budget of £150, excluding flight of course and I plan to eat out. It's just somewhere to sleep, I'll only have 3/4 days so will hardly be there.
getmore4less thank you for the idea, I've tried cruising a couple of times but it is definitely not something I want to do again.
mart.vader a few years ago I used to do the same but now I'd prefer to have somewhere booked before I go. My sleeping on beaches days are, sadly, over!
lucky18 I prefer to go as a lone traveller rather than one of a group so I can do what/go where I like. Thank you though, it's probably a good idea for a more inexerienced type
Have virtually got my itinerary planned already, reading your posts has been very helpful and confirms I've chosen the right city for a short break.
Thank you all very much

Barcelona has a great bus system also very cheap and the on-line help is very good.
this is the bus from the airport(you can get the train for the same money)

have a play with the site lots of usefull info and you can print the bus map
One option for cheap accomodation is the travelodge BUT the nearest train is an issue if your walking is as limited as you say, also if you want to stay out late central is a lot better.0
